1018 NL–BE Peace Forum · Opening the Inner Peace Initiative
Global conflicts continue, and their effects are felt far beyond the regions where they begin. Europe itself is not isolated from these realities. At the same time, societies face increasing psychological strain, social fragmentation, and disconnection.
How can individuals meaningfully contribute to peace if they themselves are exhausted, isolated, or overwhelmed?
The Inner Peace initiative was developed from this reflection. Peacebuilding requires political and institutional efforts, but it also requires individuals who are emotionally stable, socially connected, and willing to cooperate. Inner stability supports harmony. Harmony strengthens cooperation. Cooperation creates environments where individuals can remain resilient. When this cycle expands, society becomes more capable of sustaining peace.
For this reason, the 1018 NL–BE Peace Forum focused on Inner Peace not as a separate issue, but as a foundational condition for social and global peace. This approach aligns with the spirit of promoting a culture of peace as expressed in Article 10 of the DPCW — political and institutional efforts are essential, but they must be accompanied by the spread of everyday peace culture grounded in communication, mutual respect, and shared responsibility.

The forum began with interactive booths, including an introduction space, a "Sign for Her" campaign booth, sticker painting, and a Peace Message Board. Participants expressed their reflections on peace and engaged informally before the official session.
The official program opened with a congratulatory speech by Andy Vermaut, Founder of the Fundamental Rights Movement PostVersa. Carrying forward the spirit of the 11th HWPL Peace Summit, he emphasized that the next step toward peace begins with each individual.
Stephan Eshuis, co-organiser of Peacecafé and psychologist, delivered a keynote speech titled The History of Peace in Europe and Our Inner Lives, examining the history of peace in Europe and inviting reflection on how societal stability is connected to individual awareness and responsibility. A second keynote shared a journey from psychological isolation to active peace engagement, demonstrating how personal recovery can lead to social contribution.
HWPL Netherlands–Belgium also presented its annual activities under the theme of harmony and cooperation, including community dialogues, youth initiatives, interfaith exchanges, and peace education programs.
In the networking session, participants engaged in structured Speed Dating conversations followed by a "Peace Bingo" activity. Through direct dialogue, attendees met new partners, exchanged perspectives, and identified areas for continued collaboration — strengthening connections among civil society members and encouraging practical follow-up.
The forum was not designed as a one-time discussion, but as the starting point of an ongoing effort. Following the event, a civic dialogue platform titled "Peace Talk" has been launched to continue conversations on inner peace, social harmony, and everyday cooperation. Through this platform, citizens are encouraged to exchange perspectives, share experiences, and gradually build a shared understanding of peace in daily life.
Additional activities are being planned to expand participation and deepen engagement. The Netherlands Peace Summit will continue to connect personal reflection, community dialogue, and broader peacebuilding efforts, recognizing that sustainable peace requires both structural frameworks and a living culture of peace shaped by its citizens.
